Frequently Asked Questions

  • You must commit to the Institute by April 19th, 2024. If you do not, we will assume you are declining participation and will invite a scholar from the waitlist. Keep in mind, the Institute will run from June 12th - July 8th, 2024.

  • Each participant will receive a stipend according to the duration of the Seminar or Institute. The stipend for this three-week institute is $2,850. The stipend is intended to help cover travel, housing, meals, and basic academic expenses. Stipends are taxable.

  • You will receive the first half of your honorarium via direct deposit on the first day of the Institute, June 12th, 2024. You will receive the second half of your honorarium via direct deposit on the last day of the Institute, July 8th, 2024.

  • Project applicants who accept an offer to participate are expected to remain during the entire period of the program and to participate in its work on a full-time basis. If a participant is obliged through special circumstances to depart before the end of the program, it shall be the recipient institution’s responsibility to see that only a pro-rata share of the stipend is received or that the appropriate pro-rata share of the stipend is returned if the participant has already received the full stipend.

    Once an applicant has accepted an offer to attend any NEH Summer Program (Seminar, Institute, or Landmark), they may not accept an additional offer or withdraw in order to accept a different offer.

    Participants will be required to submit a project evaluation at the end of the Summer Institute.

  • Yes. Attendance to the virtual and in-person sessions is a requirement of all Summer Institute participants.

  • Please bring the books we sent you as well as any other books you might want to reference. Bring your laptop or whatever equipment you use for research, writing, and thinking. As we will work in teams on the modules, digital sharing will be productive. Plan to bring paper and pencils, or whatever equipment (drawing tools?) that help you engage and learn and think. We will provide hard copies of the readers.

  • Virginia weather can be very hot, or cool and rainy in June…so bring layers. We will visit museums as well as attend an opening reception for which you will want to be respectfully dressed. Bring walking shoes!!

  • Week 1 is virtual. Wednesday, June 12th - Friday, June 14th are 2-hour virtual sessions from 12:30 - 2:30 pm EST on Zoom.

    Weeks 2 and 3 are in-person at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Participants remain in Richmond for two weeks. They arrive on Sunday, June 16th, 2024, and depart on Friday, June 28th, 2024. Sessions are Monday - Friday, from 9 am - 5 pm EST, and include a variety of seminars hosted by visiting scholars and fieldtrips in Richmond, Virginia.

    The final Summer Institute sessions are virtual. Sessions take place on Monday, July 1 - Wednesday, July 3rd, 2024, on Zoom (session times vary.) The final Modules are due on Monday, July 8th.
